ILR cost UK 2025 — Indefinite Leave to Remain fees explained
The ILR application fee is £2,885 per person in 2025, regardless of which visa route you are applying under. Crucially, no Immigration Health Surcharge is payable on ILR applications — unlike most visa applications which require IHS to be paid upfront. For a family of four, the total ILR cost is £11,540 on the standard service.
Priority processing (+£500) targets a decision within 5 working days. Super priority (+£1,000) targets the next working day. Availability varies by ILR route and application location — not all routes offer priority services. Most applicants use the standard 6-month processing time, which gives sufficient time for most people applying ahead of any travel or employment deadlines.
Once granted, ILR gives you the right to live and work in the UK indefinitely, with no further visa fees or IHS payments. After 12 months of ILR, most people become eligible to apply for British citizenship (naturalisation), which costs £1,500 plus a £19.20 biometric fee per person.
What routes lead to ILR?
Most routes require 5 years of continuous lawful residence: Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Intra-Company Transfer, Partner/Spouse, and BN(O) routes. The Long Residence route requires 10 years of continuous lawful residence. Health and Care Workers on the dedicated route may also be eligible after 5 years, as their dependants are IHS-exempt throughout.
ILR frequently asked questions
How much does ILR cost in 2025?
The ILR application fee is £2,885 per person. Priority processing adds £500 (5 working day target). Super priority adds £1,000 (next working day target). No IHS is payable on ILR applications. For a family of four applying at the same time: £11,540 on standard service, £13,540 with priority, £15,540 with super priority.
Do you pay the IHS on an ILR application?
No. The Immigration Health Surcharge does not apply to ILR (settlement) applications. This is one of the significant financial benefits of reaching ILR — you no longer need to pay the annual IHS charge. Once granted ILR, you have full access to NHS services without any surcharge.
What is the total cost of the route from initial visa to ILR?
For the most common route (Skilled Worker): initial visa £3,824 (£719 + £3,105 IHS for 3 years) + extension £3,824 (same) + ILR £2,885 = £10,533 per person. For Partner visa route: initial £4,951 + extension £4,951 + ILR £2,885 = £12,787 per person. Use the journey section above with your actual costs for a precise figure.
